Trauma has a way of affecting the body and mind even long after the events that caused it have passed. This is why Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, evidence-backed approach that’s designed to work directly with the way you store distressing memories.[1]Â
ART therapy for trauma was developed in 2008 by licensed marriage and family therapist Laney Rosenzweig and draws on techniques from several other modalities. For instance, it uses approaches from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and brief psychodynamic therapy to guide you through a structured process of eye movements and image rescripting. And the good news is that it often produces positive results in just a handful of sessions.[2]Â
A Mission For Michael proudly offers ART as part of the residential treatment programs at our Minnesota locations, along with several other evidence-based approaches for an individualized approach to trauma recovery.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is available at both our Minnesota residential locations – the Arcola and Dellwood houses in Stillwater. We can also integrate several different kinds of support, including individual therapy, group sessions, medication management, and a full range of therapies and holistic modalities into your care plan.Â
Our clinicians will thoroughly assess whether or not ART is a good fit for your needs, considering your current clinical presentation, treatment history, and goals for treatment. If you’re interested in ART, it’s definitely worth mentioning this during the Pre-Assessment Information stage before admission, so your team can factor it into the planning process.Â
All our residential treatment plans are built uniquely for you and with the long-term in mind, including developing your supports and recovery plan for after treatment has concluded.
AMFM always keeps the focus on you and your treatment goals from the first time you reach out, ensuring that your care is set up to give you the best possible chance of success. Here is an outline of what to expect after you reach out to us:
Before officially being admitted, you’ll go through your Pre-Assessment Information stage, where your clinical needs, history, and goals are discussed in detail. We’ll work collaboratively to gain the best possible understanding of where you’re coming from and what success would look like.Â
After arrival, your treatment team will do their own clinical assessment to co-create your treatment plan that draws on all the relevant modalities available. This may include ART if you’ve been dealing with trauma-related symptoms, and it’s a good fit for you.Â
You’ll settle into your structured, supportive daily programming at one of our Stillwater-based houses. From this point, you’ll participate in individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, and other therapeutic work woven throughout each day. Supporting your stability and longer-term recovery is always in mind.Â
If ART has been included in your plan, sessions will take place on a one-to-one basis with a trained, experienced clinician. Your therapist will guide you through the process at a pace that feels challenging yet manageable.Â
Your treatment team will regularly review your progress, adjusting the plan as needed so that your care continues to evolve and change alongside you.Â
Residential treatment at A Mission For Michael deftly balances clinical programming with space for rest and reflection, with ART and other treatment woven into the broader rhythm each day.Â

ART therapy for trauma works by targeting the way distressing memories are stored in the brain. It does so by using guided horizontal eye movements – similar to EMDR – while your body is directed into a state of relaxation as you explore the traumatic experiences.Â
The eye movement helps to reduce the emotional and physical charges attached to traumatic memories, making it possible to revisit them without becoming overwhelmed. From there, the process works on image rescripting, which helps you replace the distressing images with something more empowering.[2]Â
It’s important to note you aren’t required to describe the traumatic events in detail – your clinician is merely guiding the process, and you always remain in control. This makes ART one of the more collaborative and approachable trauma therapy techniques available. Your plan will also draw on several other impactful treatments, such as CBT, DBT, and more, to find the best combination that works specifically for you.
Few residential facilities offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy, with most people attending only once per week in outpatient therapy. At AMFM’s Minnesota locations, ART is available within our full inpatient programming, offering support whenever you need it and the ability to build momentum in your recovery toward lasting healing.Â
Trauma can run deep, and processing difficult memories is meaningful work. Being in a residential environment means your clinical team is always close by and your routine is stable, so you don’t ever have to feel like you’re going at it alone.Â
Beyond ART, AMFM wields a comprehensive set of clinical tools all under one roof, drawing on unique and time-tested modalities most likely to have a major impact on your well-being. These modalities will also evolve along with your needs as treatment progresses, including having a well-rounded plan for after discharge so you can continue being supported in a meaningful way.Â
Our Stillwater locations are calm and thoughtfully designed, feeling like a place to rest and becoming part of the healing process.
