As the co-founder and CEO of NorCal NeuroStimulation and as the former medical director of the Interventional Psychiatry Department at Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento, CA, Dr. Lauren Marasa will discuss the use of therapeutic neuromodulation as a treatment modality for many treatment- resistant mental disorders. Specifically, Dr. Marasa will discuss the clinical indications and uses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Although still considered a highly stigmatized and often controversial treatment, Dr. Marasa aims to destigmatize, myth-bust, and discuss this often very appropriate treatment modality, in helping even the most highly resistant patients. This CEU event is intended for behavioral health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, counselors, and MFTs.
  • Identify types of therapeutic neuromodulation used in treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders.
  • List the clinical indications and uses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
  • Appreciate the uses of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): how modern day ECT is performed,
proposed mechanisms of action, indications for ECT and appropriate patient selection.
  • Describe the mechanism of action and clinical indications of ketamine for treatment for psychiatric
    disorders.
