WHEN ANXIETY BECOMES A PROBLEM

Anxiety is a universal element of the human experience and it’s inevitable to have felt that gut-wrenching rush of anxiety at some point. 

However, anxiety becomes dangerous when that survival instinct is dialed-in too heavily, sending the brain into an overactive mode. A disproportionate amount of stress can negatively affect the life of someone with an anxiety disorder. In these cases, the mind begins signaling “danger!”, even when the stimuli that person is facing isn’t actually dangerous to them in any tangible way. Ironically enough, it becomes the brain that is the actual attacker in these situations. 

WHAT TYPES OF ANXIETY DISORDERS EXIST?

Many types of anxiety disorders exist, but all have the potential to be paralyzing. Anxiety can deter one from thinking clearly and perceiving reality in a fair and balanced fashion. This, in turn, affects the ability to interact authentically and live in the present moment. It may make someone susceptible to irrational fears and moments of intense panic. Perhaps one with an anxiety disorder may experience panic attacks, catch themselves forgetting to breathe, or notice a constant flood of racing thoughts that seem never to disappear. All of these symptoms are part of a group of mental illnesses called anxiety disorders

WHY DO ANXIETY DISORDERS DEVELOP?

Neurochemicals and environmental factors are often both at play when it comes to anxiety disorders. Sometimes it is genetic factors that cause anxiety disorders to develop. If a parent has an anxiety disorder, a family member is much more likely to develop one as well. Events involving trauma, especially in PTSD, can cause traumatic flashbacks that trigger intense feelings of nervousness, worry and stress.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON SIGNS OF AN ANXIETY DISORDER?

Anxiety disorders can cause the prolonged existence of some symptoms such as:

  • Trembling
  • Sense of Impending Doom or Impending Panic
  • Fear of Going “Crazy” or “Insane”
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Persistent Racing Thoughts
  • Insomnia
  • Sweating

Signs of an anxiety disorder that may not always be as obvious as something like a panic attack include muscle tension, persistent fatigue, social isolation, shortness of breath, irritability and high heart rate or heart palpitations. If an individual is consistently experiencing any of these symptoms, it is possible they could have an anxiety disorder. Even Gastrointestinal (or “GI”) disruptions can be a symptom of an anxiety issue. No matter what, seeking help for these symptoms is imperative.
