In this workshop, we will cover the basics of gender-affirming care from a celebratory and gender-
alignment lens.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Describe several barriers to treatment for gender expansive clients.
- Name the possible elements of social, physical, medical, and internal transitions in which
clients may choose to engage. - Identify three ways that clinicians can provide celebratory and affirming experiences for
clients BEFORE the intake appointment. - Identify four potential pitfalls to avoid in working with gender expansive clients.

Rachel W. Friendly, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in CA, MA, VA, and Washington DC. She received her PhD from Clark University and
spent the following 15 years working in university counseling centers, where she served in both staff psychologist and training director roles on the east and
west coasts of the US. She is currently building a private practice based out of Fairfax, VA, specializing in women’s issues, college and graduate student mental health, and supporting the queer and gender expansive communities.
