At A Mission for Michael (AMFM), we realize that recovery is anything but easy. Some need a higher-performing level of care, yet others need a treatment that will allow them to continue going to school, work, or to meet family responsibilities. That is why we have our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) available in Virginia: it is a highly structured yet flexible approach to mental health treatment that will meet people where they are right now.
For more than a decade providing inpatient and outpatient services nationwide, AMFM has refined programs that incorporate evidence-based therapies, heartfelt care, and customized treatment plans. Our Virginia mental health treatment centers in Fairfax County and along Northern Virginia, allow a nurturing atmosphere wherein those we treat can develop coping mechanisms, cope with a mental health disorder, and further their path to recovery without embarrassment.
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an extremely structured mode of care appropriate for individuals that need more intervention than a once-a-week therapy but do not necessitate a full residential stay. It is an intensification of a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or a step-up due to a presence of symptoms that require more focus than is offered through a typical outpatient session.1
In an Intensive Outpatient program, patients engage in several hours of therapy a week. Individual therapy sessions, group therapy sessions, and family therapy sessions may be included, as well as psychiatric services and medication monitoring. Treatment is centered on providing individuals with coping skills training, psychoeducation, and relapse prevention skills so that they can re-enter daily living life more effectively and with fewer difficulties.2
We accept most major insurance providers and can check your coverage levels for you.
If we are not an appropriate provider for care, we will assist in finding a care provider that can help.
The IOP program is most suitable for patients suffering from moderate to severe mental disorders:
Adolescents as well as adults will profit from concentrated outpatient treatment. For some it is a step from inpatient to independent living; for others it is a replacement of hospitalization that continues to deliver diversified mental services.

At our AMFM Virginia facilities, those registered in our IOP typically attend a minimum of nine hours of therapy weekly. Programming occurs over a number of days and sometimes has a morning and evening option to fit a variety of needs.
A day may include:
Since AMFM also conducts telehealth services, clients are able to have online therapy if they need additional flexibility. This allows most to go on with work or school while dealing with mental illness.
Each plan of care from AMFM is individualized but all are provided through evidence-based therapies that treat symptomatology as well as causative processes.
Besides such core therapies, AMFM Virginia integrates holistic therapies like yoga, practice of mindfulness, creative arts therapies, equine therapies, and exercise programs. Such experiential therapies aim to treat the complete person—spirit, body, and mind.
Others present to IOPs with dual diagnoses. Perhaps someone struggles with depression and bipolar disorder or anxiety. At AMFM, we have dual diagnosis programs that address two disorders at once so that our patients do not have to make a choice to recover from other mental disorders. Integrating dual diagnosis recovery into our mental health program helps lower our risk of relapse and equips our patients with recuperative skills to attain long-term recovery.

Selection of an intensive outpatient program in Virginia is advantageous in many ways:
Fairfax County, Vienna, and Great Falls are home to AMFM Virginia Northern services that offer citizens reliable behavioral health services conveniently near their location.
Recovery is far from complete upon discharge from an IOP program. AMFM places a good deal of emphasis upon day-one aftercare planning. Clients discharge with methods of retaining health such as community provider referrals, follow-up outpatient services, and access to support groups.
Aftercare can be:
The goal is to transition smoothly into daily living as mental health is front of mind.5
Central to AMFM’s practice is that people and their lives count most. Every program of treatment is constructed from the specific needs of the person. Clients are never defined as diagnoses but honored by their story, their strengths, and their struggles as a basis of recovery.
This holistic approach unifies warm-hearted concern with higher clinical standards. Treatment teams consist of psychiatrists, therapists, and mental health specialists that bring expertise together with empathy to each session. They form comprehensive treatment plans that evolve as our clients grow.

Along with in-person treatment, AMFM provides Mission Connection, our online outpatient program. Telehealth enables Virginia-based patients to access PHP or IOP programs from their own computers. Virtual sessions incorporate interactive workshops, group work, and individual support from clinicians—all through a safe, HIPAA-secure site.
This alternative provides improved access to mental health services among those who might have travel burdens, medical issues, or time constraints. Online or in-office, it is all the same standard of care: client-centered, evidence-based, long-term recovery oriented.
AMFM Virginia rehab centers are more than buildings―they’re centers of transformation. Our programs distinguish us from others because we provide:
When patients present to AMFM in Virginia, they experience something more than a cure: community, dignity, and empowerment to live.
