This presentation explores the connection between sensory processing and mental health through the lens of Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI). Grounded in the foundational work of Dr. A. Jean Ayres, this session is designed for clinicians, educators, and mental health professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of how sensory integration influences emotional regulation, behavior, and psychological well-being. Participants will gain insight into the core principles of ASI, examine the role of our 8 sensory systems in common mental health challenges, and review current research supporting sensory-based interventions.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Describe the relationship between sensory processing and mental health, including how sensory integration challenges can contribute to emotional and behavioral difficulties.
- Discuss current research findings on the efficacy of ASI in promoting mental well-being and reducing psychological distress.
- Define Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) and explain its foundational principles within occupational therapy.

Dr. Aja Roley is a licensed Occupational Therapist and Executive Director and owner of Centerpointe for Children, a private pediatric practice in Southern California. She specializes in assessment, consultation, and intervention of children, birth to young adults, with learning and behavioral difficulties, developmental delays, autism, attention deficit disorder, and visual impairment. Her practice also offers independent education evaluations & school-based intervention and consultation. She is an instructor for the Collaborative for Leadership in Ayres Sensory Integration (CLASI). She lectures, nationally and internationally, on topics related to theory and application of sensory integration, learning, and participation. She has earned two advanced practice certificates in ASI through CLASI and the University of Southern California/Western Psychological Services program. Aja is passionate, playful, and thoughtful in her work and strives to improve the quality of life for families and infuse fun into daily routines.
