At A Mission for Michael, we specialize in helping our patients deal with the ways that addiction and mental illness work off of each other to make a bad situation worse. This type of phenomenon is referred to as dual diagnosis. While every person has a personal story of how a dual diagnosis rose up in their life that is unique to them, there are common threads of how dual diagnosis can occur. One important factor that we consider is the genetics of a patient. Both mental illness and addiction can be genetically inclined disorders, which is another way that they connect.

There is a prevalent link between substance abuse and mental illness, and it is one that can be started from either end of the spectrum. Sometimes, the risks of developing certain types of mental illnesses can be spurted on through substance abuse, but types of mental disorders can also lead people to engage in substance abuse, due to the effect that the disorder may have on their decision making abilities. One particular example of this contentious relationship is the link between alcohol abuse and bipolar disorder.

If you have ever lived with a person who has a form of bipolar disorder, then you know that there are acute challenges that they face in their everyday lives. There are also many times when their problems can seep into your own life. You’re not alone in this situation. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 6 million adults in the United States suffer from some sort of bipolar disorder. Learning to care and help someone who suffers from bipolar disorder is no easy task, but bipolar can become a very manageable mental disorder if you take logical and empathetic steps.

People who are suffering from mania and hypomania sometimes think that this is a good thing, and that they only need to prolong it. However, when it comes to bipolar 1 and 2, what goes up will usually come down. In addition to this, people with mania and hypomania are often prone to riskier behavior.
