Depression has become the leading cause of disability throughout the United States among individuals between the ages of 15 and 44. Although there are many treatments for depression that may be effective today, psychotherapy and antidepressants of which are considered first-line treatment approaches, do not work for everyone. There are approximately two-thirds of people with depression that do not receive the desired amount of relief from the first antidepressant that they try. There are at least some symptoms that will remain for these individuals even after nearly two months of this form of treatment. Then from that moment going forward, it should be known that each medication taken by the person after another is less likely to be more effective than the previous.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a form of brain stimulation that is known to be noninvasive. The devices that are used during TMS therapy treatments operate only on the outside of the body —  designed to focus the activity within the central nervous system.

This is done by applying powerful magnetic fields of the brain. During this process, there are only specific parts of the brain targeted when we know they are involved in a person’s depression. TMS treatment and therapy do not require any anesthesia and is generally easily managed and well-tolerated. Especially when comparing to the many possible side effects that are often associated with medications and electro-convulsive therapy (ECT). Headaches are typically the most commonly seen side effect during or after an individual receives a TMS treatment. Experiencing seizures is one of the more serious side-effects that are a possibility with this treatment but are not typical and very rarely seen. With that being said, TMS treatments may not be the best choice of therapy for individuals that are at high risk. High risk meaning that for those who have epilepsy, head injuries in the medical history, or other severe neurologic issues are more likely not to benefit from transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy.

TMS therapy is one of the specialized treatments that is offered at our state of the art AMFM Treatment Center in Orange County. During this procedure, one of our certified clinicians would apply an electromagnetic coil to the forehead of the patient receiving the treatment. This coil will then begin to administer a series of electromagnetic pulses that are meant to stimulate nerve cells within the patient’s brain. The coil is applied near a specific area of the brain. Specifically, the part that determines regulation control of the individual’s mood. The procedure produces a magnetic field that is comparable to nearly the same strength as an MRI scan.

A TMS session at our luxurious treatment facility in Orange County, California, usually lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. A slight tapping on the forehead from the pulses is felt during this procedure. For our team of medical professionals to determine the appropriate magnetic dosage to administer, the energy level is increased until the fingers or hands of the patient begin to twitch. If any side-effects are detected, adjustments can easily be made. The ability to alter the amount of stimulation output can be determined even during the procedure. There are a couple of different forms of TMS treatment that are known and commonly used. These forms typically include:

This is when the electromagnetic pulses are administered in rapid amounts. This form of therapy is usually seen to involve a series of treatment sessions. The standard duration of rTMS is anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.

RISKS & SIDE-EFFECTS OF TMS TREATMENT

When calculating the risks of TMS procedures as a whole, they remain to be relatively low. The absence of the implantation of electrodes and the fact that the process does not require any anesthesia are two of the most significant and main contributing factors that have proven the process to be low risk. The patient is allowed to drive themselves to and from the appointment to receive this treatment. The side-effects that are seen that come from TMS treatments are typically mild and easily detectable. This way, there is very little chance that the patients have to experience side effects that progressively worsen over specific periods. These mild side effects could include:

  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Face tingling
  • Headaches
  • Facial spasms
  • Sometimes the area where the stimulation was applied becomes tender and uncomfortable

Studies have shown that 50% to 60% of individuals suffering from depression who have failed in their attempt to receive relief from medications, is likely to experience a productive and positive response with TMS therapy. Although about one-third of these patients may experience their symptoms diminishing; ultimately, it is crucial to acknowledge that these results are not permanent.
