WHAT IS SCHIZOPHRENIA?
Schizophrenia is a complex mental disease that can cause someone to feel extremely out of touch with reality. Its origins are thought to lie in imbalanced neurochemicals – specifically dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate-according to psychological experts.
Schizophrenia can run in families and be passed down through generations. Schizophrenia usually does not appear in childhood, although there are some rare cases that exist of this occurring. Schizophrenia is seen more often in male patients, but many women have this mental disorder as well.
Be careful not to confuse Schizophrenia with Schizoaffective Disorder [backlink to schizo-effective page]. Although they contain some similar symptoms, they are not the same illness and people shouldn’t use them synonymously.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA
Schizophrenia is characterized by symptoms that are quite distressing to its sufferers. Some of these symptoms include:
- Seeing, Hearing, And Smelling Things That Aren’t There (Hallucinations)
- Fast or Jumbled Speech
- Numbness And Lack of Emotion
- Inflated or Grandiose Self-Worth and Self-Image
- Delusions, or Systems of Belief Not Based in Reality
Dopamine, supposedly, is the brain chemical linked with the typical delusions and hallucinations of Schizophrenia. Having an overabundance of Dopamine has also been shown to contribute to Schizophrenia’s existence.
